A self-tapping screw is a fastener that cuts or forms its own threads as it goes into the material. You drill a pilot hole, drive the screw, and its threads carve out a matching thread on the way in. No separate tap required!

That sets it apart from a standard machine screw, which needs a pre-threaded hole or a nut to grab onto. A self-tapping screw brings the threading with it.

You'll find them holding together metal panels, ductwork, wood framing, plastic housings, and plenty more. Some need a pilot hole but others, called self-drilling screws, drill their own.

How Do Self-Tapping Screws Work?

The threads on a self-tapping screw are harder than the material you drive into. As the screw turns into the pilot hole, the leading threads grab the sides and start shaping a matching thread. Depending on the screw, they either slice material away or push it aside.

Once the screw seats, those mated threads lock it in place. The tighter the fit, the better it resists pulling loose or backing out under vibration.

  • Thread-cutting screws carve threads like a tap and clear out a small chip, which suits harder or more brittle materials like thicker metal, cast iron, and wood.

  • Self-drilling screws, often called Tek screws, have a drill-point tip that bores the pilot hole and taps the thread in one pass, which saves a step on sheet metal, ductwork, and steel.

    Are self-tapping screws reusable?

After a few cycles, the hole can strip and lose its grip. For anything structural or safety-related, use a fresh screw or step up to a slightly larger one that catches new material rather than trusting a worn hole.
